NovelCoronavirus(2019-nCoV)

The spread of the new virus in China and worldwide is a cause of worry to all of us and sometimes it is hard to get the right perspective on the dangers from the virus. The Ministry of Health updates an information page with the latest advice. Please check that link for the most recent information.

Update 3/2/2020
As at 3/2/2020, there are no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in New Zealand but the likelihood of importing a case is high. As of 2/2/2020, all travellers arriving in New Zealand out of mainland China should self-isolate for a period of 14 days from the time they leave mainland China.

Self-isolation means avoiding situations where you could infect other people. This means all situations where you may come in contact with others, such as social gatherings, work, school, child care/pre-school centres, university, faith-based gatherings, aged care and healthcare facilities, prisons, sports gatherings, supermarkets, restaurants, shopping malls, and all public gatherings. If you are a visitor to New Zealand, this means you should avoid sitting in a restaurant, participating in any type of tour group, or using public transport, including flights, buses, and trains between cities in New Zealand .

Please do not come to the medical centre without telephoning us first, if you have come from mainland China recently. Please call Healthline for advice 0800 611 116 or call us to speak to a nurse. You may be asked to call us from your car on arrival and you may be seen in your car.

In most cases Coronavirus causes a flu-like respiratory illness, which occasionally can progress to pneumonia, causing difficulty breathing. Many other colds and flu-like illnesses are indistinguishable from Coronavirus. There is no specific anti-viral treatment and no antibiotics will cure this illness.
