The Meningococcal B vaccine is now funded for under ones with catch up immunisations for up to five-year-olds. It is also funded for those aged 13 to 25 who are entering into or in their first year of specified close-living situations (e.g., boarding school hostels, tertiary halls, and military barracks).

Meningococcal bacteria is commonly carried in the nose and throat and is spread through contact with saliva (e.g., kissing or sharing drink bottles). Although the bacteria do not commonly cause disease, in rare cases it can rapidly lead to Meningococcal Disease which may develop into Meningococcal Meningitis, Septicemia or Pneumonia. Initial symptoms are difficult to distinguish from other infectious illnesses particularly flu-like illnesses, but approximately 80% of cases develop a non-blanching rash (meaning the skin does not go pale/white when pressed on) but this is a late sign of infection.

Meningococcal disease is very serious, and can be fatal, or have serious long-term complications.

The best way to protect our tamariki against Meningococcal B is by vaccination. Book in with our nurses for your child’s Meningococcal B immunisation.
