With summer finally here and the warmer weather in sight, it’s important to remember to look after yourself amongst all the celebrations and fun times this holiday season. Finding a balance between keeping your healthy habits going while still enjoying the festivities with friends and family will mean you can have the best of both worlds, and arrive at the New Year fresh and ready to go.

Here are some top tips to make this summer a healthy one for you and your whānau:

  • Stay hydrated – With the temperatures increasing and the days at their longest, it’s imperative to keep drinking water. Especially if you plan to be outside or active in the sun, dehydration is more likely to become a factor than it is through the winter. Carry a water bottle with you and refill it regularly throughout the day. Aim for a minimum of two litres for adults, but more if you can.
  • Get outdoors - The better weather and long days are perfect reasons to get outside and explore your surroundings, wherever you may be this summer. Ride a bike, head out for a picnic or meet up with some friends for your favourite game or sport. The options are endless! The fresh air and sunshine are great ways to keep your mind healthy too.

  • Relieve stress and take a break – There is plenty going on throughout the year and many stressors that we all deal with. Make sure you take some time to relax, unwind and recharge the batteries. Reading a book, heading to the beach, and spending time with family and friends are all great ways to disconnect and enjoy some much-needed down time.

  • Drink wisely – Summer is of course the time for family gatherings, parties, and celebrations. Keeping alcohol consumption in moderation while still enjoying these festivities will ensure you get the best out of the summer season without the potential negatives that can come from overdoing it. Mixing in a few glasses of water here and there is a great idea and keeps you well hydrated too.

  • Get some exercise in – It’s important to keep looking after your physical health. With the heat, consider exercising early in the morning or later in the evening if you can, or moving indoors if that’s an option for you too.

Enjoy the summer celebrations with family and friends this holiday period. If you can keep a few of these tips in mind at the same time, this will contribute to you staying healthy and well at the same time!
